WONDERFUL to see some of those very few souls interested in helping the humanity.
But due to the wicked nature of the society and the bad times, today good social services have become exploitative and anti social. So one should be careful while working under any banner. It is better to be alone just as you have done. And another word ! Some of the banned drugs in the USA are being given by doctors even by way of social service UNknowingly. One should not get into sinful life without appropriate knowledge because today Man is totally wicked against the earth and god.

Dr. Darshna Thakker

First and foremost please accept my appreciation for your noble initiative which is really great and it is need of the hour. We at RDY here in Ladakh also doing almost same by realizing the problems of our mothers, daughters, wives and sisters.

We are honestly, earnestly and gracefully expressing our sincere thanks and gratitude for your noble work and looking forwards to hear from you.

Women for Women’s Health (WWH)

Purpose

To create a platform for the women of Ladakh to discuss women health issue in a safe and comfortable environment, for women (exclusively) to learn about women’s health and women’s issues.

To create a library so everyone can have access to information about women’s health related issues.

Background

Women for Women’s Health (WWH) a program initiated by Rural Development & You (RDY). It began as a result of a conversation between female friends. They realized that they had many questions about reproductive health, yet they were shy about approaching the local doctors. Despite the fact of having two gynecologists at the local hospital, many young women (both married and unmarried) are reluctant to consult them. This reluctance is due to the fact that Ladakh is a small, tight-knit community, where gossip about women can have serious repercussions.
On the other hand, there are many tragic stories in which several women have died or suffered unnecessarily due to the lack of basic information about reproductive health.

Women for Women’s Health (WWH) is a monthly women-only event that provides a safe environment for women to ask questions about their reproductive health. The workshop enables the women to meet the doctors outside the chaotic and depressive hospital atmosphere. In the workshop they can learn about reproductive health in a comfortable environment. The workshop meets the needs of both local women who want to have basic and in-depth health education, and local doctors who believe in providing health education to the community but are constrained by their work schedule.

Each workshop lasts five hours and in that time the following activities occur: team-building activities; a confidential method for submitting questions; the screening of a reproductive health video; a short talk (1-2 hrs.) by a gynecologist; a question & answer period; as well as a health games and skits.

Each workshop addresses the following topics:-
• Puberty & menstruation
• Pregnancy & Childbirth
• Adolescent Sexual Health
• Nutrition & Hygiene
• Sexually transmitted infections (STI)
• Contraception

In addition, there are also occasional speakers on specific health topics that are requested by the participants –such as HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, infant care and child nutrition.

Each workshop comprises 100 participants. The group is large enough to generate many questions yet small enough to keep the atmosphere informal. The participants are local students, as well as married and unmarried women from different sectors of the population.

Nowadays the workshops are taking place in different Villages of Ladakh with the support of dZi foundation we have held 12 successful workshops since June 2009.

We have found that the health issue in the remote villages is most dramatic. More often than not illnesses are attributed to religious beliefs and as a result many people live in painful and unbelievable circumstances. We believe this project could make a difference in Ladakh.

Objectives

• To provide a safe and comfortable environment for women to learn about women’s health, hygiene, maternity and other related issues.
• To build a strong community of women from different generations, bringing together married and unmarried women, as well as young adolescents/students including Christian, Muslim and Buddhist women, to disseminate knowledge and address the lack of proper education concerning women’s issues.
• To advance women’s health education among rural village women through activities and multimedia based workshops.
• To produce and screen a series of videos in coordination with local medical personnel who do not have enough time to travel to remote villages.
• To create a reproductive health library so all women have access to adequate information through books and other materials (DVDs, posters, etc).
• To evolve religious head as resource persons, so that women can have access to information and knowledge related to reproductive health in the context of religion.

With regards

Padma
