Featured NGO
Based out of the Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Manav Sadhna carries Gandhi's work to the present. The ashram was surrounded by children who spent their days out of school, sorting through trash in order to survive. Manav Sadhna took direct action, providing the children with creative ways to learn and thrive while still earning the same amount of money. Find out how they are doing it!

Vision Statement

May 2003

Overview:
The ProPoor web portal will leverage technology to provide three major functions. Firstly, it will offer inspirational and development content to motivate, promote and enable positive social action. Secondly, it will present and incubate an unlimited variety of projects to which volunteers can give their service. Thirdly, NGOs will be offered an array of services in a number of well-informed, creative, or specifically targeted ways.

Site Content:
The hallmark of the ProPoor site has been its massive data from nonprofit listings to publications to people. We will continue to support the data but hope to build an open-source-like network of volunteer information nodes that will feed more content into the site. Beyond that, an intelligent e-pinions systems is also envisioned to build an Amazon-like peer review system for NGOs.

ProPoor will continue its daily development news. It will expand the "success stories" to include inspiring stories of change, profiles of everyday heroes, and journals of personal experiences in service. Furthermore, it will add theme-based vertical channels for greater NGO-to-NGO interaction, sharing of best practices, and communications across geographical boundaries.

Volunteer Space:
This is the heart of the portal. The content will stay dynamic based on the inputs from its volunteers. CharityFocus chapters, Indicorps volunteers and India Calls are potential nodes for this effort. The idea is to have islands of inspired volunteer networks co-exist with a unified web-based front-end. The portal will provide a way to manage volunteers, create a service space among the online volunteer to increase their interaction and provide an array of options for translating compassion into concrete action.

NGO Services:
To empower various nonprofit efforts, we will provide them with (a) a way to do online fundraising through Give's backend, within India and overseas; (b) provide a platform for them to sell handicrafts online with C-shops; (c) make it really easy for them to request volunteer support, virtual or local, and connect with other NGOs working locally or internationally.

Partners:
For the portal to effectively outreach in the ways outlined above, many creative synergies will be need to formulated. Indicorps has pledged its full support. Give Foundation is also ready to take concrete action items. Many organizations in the US whose work serves South Asia are also equally excited to join hands!
